Make up vanities can be placed in a bedroom or in the bathroom. Make up vanity sets generally come with a counter top, a mirror and a storage part, and offer a space to store cosmetics and beauty products and to apply make-up.

A bedroom vanity generally has a counter top with space for products, and a storage part with drawers, cupboards or shelves. A mirror is an essential part of a make-up vanity set. Cosmetics, hair care products, combs and brushes and other beauty products can be stored in the drawers. Some sets come with a stool, designed in the same style, which can be conveniently placed under the counter space.

When considering where to place the set, lighting is an important feature. Some makeup vanity sets come with a light on the counter, or a lighted mirror, but these take up counter space and usually do not provide an even light for applying makeup. A much better option is to place the furniture near the window for natural light or near a bright light source.

While the style and the design may be important features, for most women it is also essential to have enough storage space. Ideally, the vanity would have a range of drawers in different sizes, so that all items can be stored away and only a few everyday products must be left on the counter. Some drawers have different compartments for a range of products, but specifically made trays can also be bought to make the drawers more organized. A large counter top with enough space to keep a few necessary items, and a big mirror, are also good features.

Makeup vanities come in a variety of materials including different types of wood and metal. Wood is the most popular material for the more traditional and classic designs, while contemporary designs usually use metal. Cherry, mahogany and other types of hardwood are durable, sturdy and very attractive. One important feature in a makeup vanity is how stain resistant the material is. It is easy to spill some nail polish, powder or other cosmetic products on the counter, so the material should not be easily damaged by staining from the most common cosmetic products and should also be easy to clean.

While most make up vanities are designed for women and used by women, men have also started using them for storing personal care products and for decorating the bedroom or the bathroom.
